Apply the thread sealing tape.

If leaks occur wrap with thread seal tape and carefully tighten with an adjustable wrench until there are no leaks. Wrap the shower arm and head in rags and. For severe deposits you may have to do this several times.
Replace your shower head prep the shower arm. Remember to apply the tape. Attach the replacement showerhead.
Turn on the water and check for leaks. Caulk the shower arm flange to protect internal elements from water spray. Unscrew the existing showerhead.
