In a tiled shower removing the pan is easier since the pan is caulked into place at the bottom edge of the tiling.

In that case removing it may prove to be your only viable option. Almost all pre formed shower pans have a vertical flange about 1 high around the perimeter which may or may not be visible without removing the wall substrate. If this is the case you should attempt to move it further away from the wall using the pry bar.
The pan may be resistant at first.
